Avalanche Level 1: Antelope Butte - Registration OPEN
NSP Avalanche Level 1 Course Overview:
The NSP Level 1 course will introduce the fundamental principles of avalanche hazard, safety, and rescue using a combination of classroom lectures and field day activities. Students will walk away with knowledge and equipment to serve as technicians capable of assisting in an avalanche rescue. The course includes a pre-course study exam and a final take-home exam. Students will be graded as Pass/Fail/Incomplete at the conclusion of the course.
Classroom Dates:
Our classroom sessions will be held online using Zoom. We'll hold 4 sessions of presentations/lectures on Wednesday nights from 7:00pm to 9:15pm (Mountain) during the nights of February 22, March 1, March 8 & March 15. Students will be sent Zoom meeting invites prior to the start of each session.
Field Dates:
The patrol director at Antelope Butte has welcomed us to conduct our field days on March 18 & 19.
With some luck, we should see some decent snowfall in the weeks leading up. Note: Field days are mandatory and there will be no make-up dates available. Students must be able to attend both field dates.
Required Equipment:
All students must arrive for the field days equipped with an avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe. These items may be borrowed, however, it is STRONGLY encouraged that students purchase these items before the March 18-19 field days. The field days will allow students to become familiar with this equipment and having their own equipment will make them an asset to their organization. Recommendations on what beacon/probe/shovels to purchase will be sent to students after completing their registration.
Required Textbooks:
Several books will be required for the course. Assigned reading materials to be purchased will be sent to students after completing their registration.
Course Prerequisites:
FEMA ICS-100, ICS-200, and ICS-700 online course certifications are required prerequisites for the NSP Level 1. These courses can be completed online by students prior to the night #4 classroom session to be held on March 15th.
Course Fees:
$200 for NSP members, $250 for non-NSP members. Payment details will be sent out to students once they've completed their registration.
